Research Summary

This scoping review evaluated research published from 2010 through 2020 on the relationship between substance use during pregnancy or postpartum and perinatal depression and anxiety. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The review describes a complex, potentially bidirectional relationship in which mental health symptoms and substance use can reinforce one another, while noting variation in study methods and measures. The authors recommend addressing substance use and depression or anxiety together in perinatal care and identify a need for more consistent research on maternal and infant outcomes.
