Researchers interviewed 26 mothers with opioid use disorder about healthcare and early parenting, on average about ten months after delivery. Participants described feeling closely scrutinized by healthcare professionals, wanting ordinary parenting experiences, navigating their identities as mothers and people in recovery, and benefiting from clinicians and peers who offered support and advocacy. The findings highlight how mistrust and surveillance can undermine maternal confidence and suggest prioritizing respectful care, family connection, and practical support.
