Research Summary

This prospective study examined pregnancy and birth outcomes among women receiving care in Hawaiʻi, comparing pregnancies with and without methamphetamine exposure while accounting for several potential confounding factors. Methamphetamine-exposed pregnancies were associated with increased risks of preterm birth and lower birth weight, highlighting the importance of prenatal care and substance use treatment. Because the study was observational, its findings should not be interpreted as proving that methamphetamine exposure alone caused every observed difference.
